On Tuesday, Loris Capirossi, a former MotoGP rider with nine premier-class race victories, voiced his contentment regarding the upgraded race track at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC). The circuit is set to host its inaugural round in India from September 22 to 24. Capirossi, currently serving as a safety advisor to MotoGP organizers and rights holders, Dorna Sports, expressed his satisfaction with the track modifications. The BIC circuit, previously known for hosting Formula 1 races between 2011 and 2013, has undergone significant modifications to accommodate two-wheel racing. Notable changes include the expansion of gravel traps along the track, a safety measure designed to provide added protection to riders in the event of an off-track excursion. Additionally, the installation of air fences and foam barriers has been implemented, further enhancing safety measures for riders. The Formula 1 track layout had 16 turns but the one for Moto GP has 13. The track has one of the longest straights on the calendar, increasing the possibility of riders touching the record speed of 370kmph. Caprirossi went for a ride on the track and was pleased with its layout.
“Everything seems to be going smoothly and I am really pleased with the layout of the track. There are fast corners and good breaking points and it will be interesting to see how each of the riders race here,” he said.
The Grand Prix of India will feature 82 riders from 41 teams vying for top honours in Moto GP, Moto 2 and Moto 3 over the course of three days. It will be the biggest motor racing event to be held in India after Formula 1. Capirossi also revealed his favourites to win the race.
Visa issues hit inaugural Moto-GP
Some of the riders and team officials bound for the inaugural Moto-GP round in India, including six-time champion Marc Marquez, are awaiting their visas ahead of the race this weekend. Repsol Honda Team confirmed that the arrival of its riders Marquez and Joan Mir in India has been delayed due to visa issues. Both the Spanish drivers were scheduled to visit the Honda India factory in Manesar on Wednesday but now that visit stands cancelled.
