After a fight broke out between villagers and police officers in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, prohibitive orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were issued. The inquiry into an alleged murder there apparently led to a battle that left nearly six police officers hurt.

To control the situation, security forces were deployed throughout the entire town. Some people allegedly pelted stones at the police teams, leaving nearly half a dozen personnel injured. A few vehicles were also allegedly set on fire, forcing police to use force and use tear gas to disperse the mob.

“More than 24 people have been arrested so far,” police said

The incident involves a citizen of the village of Belra. The people had complained about the inquiry into the case and claimed that the person had been murdered. They emphasised that despite the villager’s murder, nothing had been discovered throughout the police teams’ investigation.

The fights that broke out on Monday evening and resulted in the injury of many police officers are being attributed by the police to a “conspiracy.” An investigation into the situation has begun.

Senior Superintendent of Police from the Haridwar zone, Ajay Singh, said, “One person had died and villagers are alleging that the person was murdered but nothing was found in the investigation. Some miscreants pelted stones at the police today. More than 24 people have been arrested. It seems attack on police was done under a conspiracy.”

He added that the situation is under control and the police teams are looking into the matter for further details.
