MP Kartikeya Sharma posed a question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday regarding the current status of the adoption of electric vehicles and the initiatives implemented to promote them in Haryana and the National Capital Region (NCR).
In a written reply, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways in the Upper House, Nitin Gadkari, emphatically stated that there is widespread utilization of electric vehicles (EVs) both within the government and the private sector. The Minister highlighted that the adoption of electric vehicles has gained substantial momentum, with a notable increase in their usage across various sectors.
While the popularity of electric vehicles has been steadily increasing, a significant challenge lies in the higher cost of electric vehicles compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.
Minister Gadkari went on to express that as the production volume of electric vehicles rises, there is an expectation that within the next eighteen months, the costs of petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles will be same.
This expectation is based on the fact that the monthly expense for a four-wheeler running on petrol amounts to 30,000, whereas the cost for an electric vehicle would range between three to four thousand per month.
