The US will begin training Ukrainian pilots to operate U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets, starting at an Air National Guard base in October, as part of an effort to bolster Ukraine’s defense against Russian forces. While the training is a long-term commitment, the Pentagon emphasizes that it won’t immediately impact Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive.
The training will occur at Morris Air National Guard base in Arizona, with pilots first undergoing English instruction at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas to prepare for operating the advanced aircraft. The goal is to address the need for skilled Ukrainian pilots as European allies, including Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, supply F-16s to Ukraine. The training curriculum covers essential aspects such as flying the F-16, formation flying, weapon operation, air combat tactics, and managing air defense systems. Ground training also includes centrifuge sessions to help pilots withstand the G-forces experienced in the F-16 cockpit.
Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder clarified that the training’s primary objective is to offer long-term support to Ukraine, not specifically the ongoing counteroffensive. The training program will involve several Ukrainian fighter pilots and maintenance personnel.
While the introduction of F-16 fighter jets is a step toward strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, American military officials emphasize that developing proficient F-16 squadrons takes years of training. Thus, the immediate impact of the aircraft on Ukraine’s defense capabilities will be limited.
The decision to join European allies in training Ukrainian pilots aims to prevent delays in getting Ukrainian pilots prepared to operate the F-16s effectively. This collaborative effort will help streamline the training process and provide Ukraine with the skilled personnel required to operate the advanced fighter jets. In the face of ongoing tensions with Russia and the need to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities, the training initiative reflects a larger strategy by the U.S. and its European partners to provide critical support to Ukraine and reinforce its security against potential threats.
