Luigi Mangione, the accused in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, unexpectedly gained attention for his fashion choice during his court appearance. On December 23, Mangione, 26, faced 11 charges, including first-degree murder and terrorism-related offenses, but his burgundy sweater became the focal point of media coverage. Initially thought to be a $1,000 Maison Margiela piece, it was later revealed to be a more affordable “washable Merino crewneck sweater” from Nordstrom, priced at $89.50. Following the arraignment, the sweater sold out quickly, with the price now discounted to $62.65.

The garment’s sudden popularity underscores the influence of high-profile events on consumer trends, even in the context of criminal proceedings. In court, Mangione pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, voiced concerns about the fairness of his trial due to the heavy security and the presence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams during his extradition.

“They are literally treating him like he is some sort of political fodder, like some sort of spectacle. He was on display for everyone to see in the biggest stage perp walk I’ve ever seen in my career, it was unnecessary. He’s been cooperative with law enforcement… There was no reason for the NYPD and everybody to have these big assault rifles,” Agnifilo stated.

She also questioned the mayor’s role, saying, “It was perfectly choreographed, and what was the New York City Mayor doing at this press conference, your honour? That just made it utterly political.”
