External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar inaugurated the new Indian Embassy Chancery in Rome, Italy, marking a milestone in the expanding relationship between the two nations. The inauguration underscores their growing collaboration in historical, economic, and maritime domains.

Strengthening Historical Ties

Speaking at the event, Jaishankar highlighted the deep-rooted historical connection between India and Italy.

“A lot of India’s historical interface with Europe was with Italy,” he said, acknowledging Italy’s role as a producer, customer, and financier in India’s historical commerce.

Boosting Diplomatic Services

The new Chancery aims to improve services for the Indian community in Italy and symbolizes the growing partnership between the two nations.
Jaishankar shared on platform X:

“This new chancery befits the continued expansion of the India-Italy partnership in recent years.”

India-Middle East-Europe Connectivity Corridor (IMEC): A Game Changer

Jaishankar praised the India-Middle East-Europe Connectivity Corridor as a transformative initiative agreed upon during India’s G20 presidency in 2023. He described IMEC as a “game changer,” strengthening ties between the founding members, including Italy.

Shared Maritime Vision

The Foreign Minister underlined the shared commitment of India and Italy to ensuring maritime freedom, recalling Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s description of the Mediterranean as a vital link between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
“Our maritime interests and shared commitment bring our countries closer,” Jaishankar noted.

India’s Growing Role in Europe and the Mediterranean

Jaishankar appreciated Italy’s growing focus on Asia under PM Meloni’s leadership, describing Italy as a key partner in Europe and the Mediterranean.
He emphasized frequent high-level interactions as evidence of the deepening ties, reflecting mutual commitment to addressing global and regional challenges.

Participation in Global Dialogues

During his visit, Jaishankar will attend the Outreach session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Fiuggi and participate in the 10th MED Mediterranean Dialogue in Rome. These engagements highlight India’s expanding influence in global affairs.

This visit reinforces the historical and modern synergy between India and Italy, paving the way for deeper cooperation in diplomacy, trade, and global connectivity.
