Iran Builds First ‘Defensive Tunnel’ In Tehran Amid Rising Tensions With Israel

Iran is constructing its first-ever “defensive tunnel” in the capital, Tehran, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The tunnel, designed to enhance the country’s security infrastructure, will connect a station on the Tehran metro to the Imam Khomeini hospital, offering direct underground access to the medical facility. The project follows recent tensions with Israel, which carried out strikes on Iranian targets.

The tunnel’s construction is seen as a response to Israel’s targeted attacks on Iran, including missile factories and other facilities in and around Tehran. The attacks, carried out last month, were in retaliation for an assault on Israeli territory by Iran in early October. The defensive tunnel, described as a novel undertaking, will be the first of its kind in Iran, according to the head of Tehran’s transport department, who confirmed the project to Tasnim.

The development of such a tunnel signals heightened security concerns and a new approach to defense in Tehran, a city often seen as a key strategic hub in the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran. The tunnel’s completion is expected to provide secure and undisrupted access to critical infrastructure in the event of further strikes or military operations.
