In response to persistent demands from the residents of Ladakh, the Union government is actively considering the creation of new administrative units in the region. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been advocating for the establishment of five new districts, it is reported that the government is likely to announce two new administrative units to address the aspirations of the local population.

According to sources, discussions are underway regarding the grant of additional administrative units and an augmentation of powers to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils. While the demand for district status for Zanskar and Nubra is currently under consideration, the prospects of full statehood for Ladakh seem unlikely at this juncture.

The Tribune reported that the government’s focus is on empowering the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils, potentially paving the way for increased local governance and decision-making. Talks also include considerations of the Sixth Schedule, a constitutional provision that provides for the autonomous administration of tribal areas, and addressing local employment concerns. In the midst of these developments, a delegation representing Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), including Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Brig BD Mishra (retd), Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, and chairpersons of the Hill Development Councils, is scheduled to meet Union Minister Nityanand Rai on February 19. The meeting aims to discuss the ongoing agitations and find common ground on the region’s administrative structure.

MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has also expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of the agitation on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections for the sole seat in the Union Territory. Sources indicate that the central government may soon make an official announcement regarding the creation of two new districts – Zanskar and Nubra – in Ladakh. This move is expected to address the long-standing demands of the locals, particularly those residing in areas situated far from the current district headquarters.
As Ladakh navigates through these developments, the proposed administrative changes are anticipated to bring about a significant shift in local governance, meeting the aspirations of the residents while contributing to the overall development of the region.
