Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Turkey’s involvement has drawn significant attention, especially after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent warships to Lebanon. While this move has sparked speculation about Turkey joining the war against Israel, the Turkish government clarified that these warships were dispatched to evacuate Turkish citizens from Lebanon as conflicts in the region intensify.
Erdogan made strong statements criticising Israel‘s actions during the ongoing conflict, particularly regarding the Gaza and Lebanon operations. He was quoted saying:
“PM Netanyahu is acting out his dream of a ‘utopia’ and ‘promised land’ for Israel. After Lebanon, the next place on which Israel will set its eyes will be our homeland,” referencing concerns that Israel’s regional ambitions could extend beyond current borders.
Lebanon has become increasingly embroiled in the conflict as Hezbollah, supported by Iran, engages in regular clashes with Israeli forces along the Lebanese border. As Israel continues to expand its operations, particularly in southern Lebanon, Turkey’s decision to send naval assets raises eyebrows, especially given Erdogan’s ongoing criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon. Erdogan has previously accused Israel of attempting to destabilise the region and even claimed that Turkey could be a future target.

However, Turkey’s official stance remains focused on the evacuation mission, with no confirmation of direct military involvement in the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Turkish lawmakers also held closed-door discussions about the growing war in the Middle East, underlining Ankara’s concern about the broader implications for regional stability. While Erdogan has positioned Turkey as a strong critic of Israel, it is not yet clear if the country will take further military steps in the escalating conflict.
