Trinamool Congress Clean Sweeps All Four Civic Bodies With Siliguri Being Big Win After 28 Years

While CM Mamata congratulates winning candidates, Abhishek keeps mum

The Trinamool Congress on Monday received a thumping victory in the elections to four municipal corporations in West Bengal – Bidhannagar, Siliguri, Chandernagore and Asansol.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee congratulated the people of Bidhannagar, Siliguri, Chandernagore and Asansol for supporting TMC candidates.

“It is once again an overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush. My heartiest congratulations to the people of Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri and Chandanagore for having put their faith and confidence on All India Trinamool Congress candidates in the Municipal Corporation elections. We are committed to carry forward our development work further with greater zeal and enthusiasm. My sincerest gratitude to Ma Mati Manush,” Mamata tweeted.

While interacting with the media before leaving for Siliguri, the chief minister said: “The more you win, the more you have to be humble. This time, the main goal of our government was industrialisation, besides increasing employment opportunities.”

While Mamata thanked the winning candidates, her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee did not make any comment.

According to data available on the State Election Commission’s website, Trinamool won in 36 out of 47 wards of Siliguri Municipal Corporation, while the BJP, Left and Congress got five seats, four seats and one seat, respectively.

Trinamool candidate Gautam Deb, who won with a majority, will be the next mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

In Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Trinamool won in 39 out of 41 wards while the Congress got one seat.

Former mayor Krishna Chakraborty and Sabyasachi Dutta, a former chairman of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, are both the contenders for the post of mayor.
