Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in war-torn Ukraine today and is set to discuss peaceful resolution strategies with President Volodymyr Zelensky later. This visit follows his high-profile trip to Moscow, which drew criticism from the US and its Western allies.

Modi traveled to Kyiv from Poland aboard a ‘Rail Force One’ train, a journey of approximately 10 hours, marking the second and final leg of his two-nation tour. He was accompanied by Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

The Indian Prime Minister will engage in both one-on-one and delegation-level discussions with Zelensky, focusing on potential solutions to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This is the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since the country gained independence in 1991.

“I look forward to the opportunity to build upon earlier conversations with President Zelensky on strengthening bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict,” Modi stated before his departure from Delhi.

India has maintained a neutral position in the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy. Modi’s administration has embraced a “multi-alignment” approach, engaging with both Russia and Ukraine independently.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has highlighted India’s potential role in facilitating a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
