Lionel Messi to Return to India for Argentina’s 2025 Match, Says Kerala Sports Minister

Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman announced that the Argentina football team, including Lionel Messi, will visit the state for an international match in 2025. Speaking at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, he confirmed the event would be fully supported by the state government. “All the financial assistance for organising this high-profile football event will be provided by the merchants of the state,” he said, expressing confidence in Kerala’s capacity to host this historic match.

Messi’s last appearance in India was in 2011 during an international friendly match between Argentina and Venezuela, which ended in a goalless draw. Known for his massive fan base in India, particularly in Kerala, Messi’s return will be a significant occasion in the state, which has long been passionate about football.

Messi, who moved to Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has only expanded his fanbase in India, where many fans stay up late to follow his matches. His career, capped by winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has made him an icon in Kerala, where football culture is deeply rooted.

Despite achieving everything in his career, including the World Cup title, Messi continues to be an integral part of Argentina’s national team, playing a crucial role in World Cup qualifiers for the 2028 edition. His rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, also remains active with the Portuguese team, with both players hinting at another World Cup appearance in 2026.
