At least 35 individuals have lost their lives, with numerous others unaccounted for, following the rupture of a dam in southern Kenya, according to CNN. The region has endured weeks of intense rainfall and destructive flash floods. Rescue crews are tirelessly scouring the area near Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County, sifting through mud and debris in search of survivors.

Rescue teams near Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County, Kenya, are tirelessly combing through mud and debris in search of survivors. Governor Susan Kihika has cautioned that the number of casualties could significantly increase. Isaac Maigua Mwaura, the government spokesperson, stated that hundreds of individuals have been displaced by flooding in Kenya, leading to 103 reported deaths by March, as per CNN’s coverage.

Susan Kihika stressed the alarming situation unfolding in Mai Mahiu as floodwaters swept away both people and homes in Kenya. She remarked, “We’re grappling with the situation, although it’s quite overwhelming. Nonetheless, we’re exerting our utmost efforts, especially in reaching out to those who may still be alive despite being swept away.”

Kihika highlighted that recent heavy rains had severed a portion of the road, complicating access to Mai Mahiu. Teams are prioritizing the clearance of debris to facilitate access for rescue operations and recovery of victims.

As per the Kenya Red Cross Society, a considerable number of individuals were transported to a medical facility in Mai Mahiu on Monday due to the flash floods’ impact.
