Amid growing global trade tensions, Russia has reaffirmed its unwavering support for India, despite the United States imposing a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods. Roman Babushkin, Minister of Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Russian Embassy in India, stated that India and Russia have developed a strong “immunity” against external disruptions.
Speaking to ANI, Babushkin remarked,
“Russia has nothing to do with that… We are absolutely not afraid about relations. Despite any geopolitical tensions and deliberate attempts to disrupt or derail these relations, we have developed an immunity against negative external factors.”
He further expressed full confidence in the continued growth of India-Russia trade relations, saying,
“Whatever happens, we are confident that our trade and economic relations will further grow for the benefit of both our proud nations.”
Backdrop: US Tariffs Spark Global Concerns
On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping tariff policy, aiming for what he called “fairness and reciprocity” in global trade. Countries across the globe were hit with hefty import duties, with the US justifying the move as a response to unfair trade practices, subsidies, and VAT systems.
Here’s a quick look at the tariffs imposed on key nations:
- Vietnam – 46%
- Sri Lanka – 44%
- China – 34%
- Bangladesh – 37%
- Taiwan – 32%
- Pakistan – 29%
- India – 26%
- Japan – 24%
- EU – 20%
- Israel – 17%
- UK – 10%
India-Russia: A Steadfast Partnership
Despite the pressure of these geopolitical tensions, Russia’s message was clear: their partnership with India remains unshaken. The long-standing diplomatic and economic relationship between the two countries is expected to thrive further, particularly as they navigate an increasingly complex global trade environment.
Babushkin’s comments come as a strong reassurance to New Delhi, signaling continued cooperation and trust between the two nations—even as global policies shift rapidly.
