Bihar Lightning Strikes Claim 25 Lives; Delhi Braces for Thunderstorms

Bihar Lightning Strikes Claim 25 Lives; Delhi Braces for Thunderstorms

In a welcome break from the heatwave that struck Delhi a few days back, the national capital’s sky became cloudy on Thursday with light drizzle in certain areas of the city. While the weather became erratic in many areas of Bihar on Thursday, which resulted in as many as 25 deaths statewide because of lightning and hail storms, PTI reported.

In Delhi’s Safdarjung weather observatory recorded a high of 39.6 degrees Celsius, 4.5 notches above normal.

The lowest temperature in the national capital on Thursday was 25.9 degrees Celsius, six notches above normal. It is also the highest night temperature of April in the past six months, as per the IMD.

Thunderstorm Likely on Friday, Saturday in Delhi 

After Thursday, the IMD has forecasted the same kind of weather for Delhi on Friday and Saturday. The national capital is expected to have a cloudy sky, accompanied by thunderstorms and light drizzle on April 11 and 12, as per the weather department.

For Friday, the weather may result in trees or branches falling, causing small traffic disturbances. Drivers are asked to exercise caution on the roads. The weather may also cause interruption in electricity supply in Delhi NCR.

Individuals are warned to avoid traffic congestion on their way before they set off and keep a distance from power lines or electric wires. They are also warned to avoid water bodies and all objects that carry electricity.

April 13 will have cloudy sky with the possibility of a light rain but without any thunderstorm, after which two clear sky days on April 14 and 15.

Weather conditions can take a turn from April 16 since the IMD has forecasted gusty surface winds during daytime for two days in Delhi.

Tejashwi Yadav on Lighting Strike in Bihar

However, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that over 50 people have died.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of more than 50 people in various incidents of storm, rain, lightning, tree and wall collapse in Bihar. I express my deepest condolences. May God provide strength to the families affected by the disaster in this hour of grief,” he said in the post.

The Thursday tragedy followed 13 fatalities in the state on Wednesday because of lightning strikes.

The weather office has forecast heavy showers in some Bihar districts on Saturday and Friday. The districts are – Madhubani, Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada, Patna.
