In the heart of Nebraska lies Monowi, a village unlike any other. With a population of just one, it stands as the world’s smallest village, a title it has held for years. This unique community is home to Elsie Eiler, an 86-year-old woman who has lived alone in Monowi since 2004, following the passing of her husband, Rudy.

Monowi was once a thriving village, with 123 residents in 1930. However, over the decades, the population gradually dwindled. By 1980, only 18 people remained, and by the year 2000, Elsie and Rudy were the last inhabitants. Since Rudy’s death, Elsie has managed the entire village on her own.

Despite its solitary population, Monowi is far from forgotten. The village spans approximately 54 hectares and continues to attract visitors, particularly during the summer months. These visitors come not only to witness the singular charm of Monowi but also to lend a hand to Elsie with her daily tasks.

In her role as the village’s sole resident, Elsie wears many hats. She serves as the mayor, bartender, and librarian, ensuring that Monowi remains functional. Her remarkable story offers a glimpse into a lifestyle that is truly one-of-a-kind, highlighting the resilience and determination of a woman who has kept a village alive all on her own.
