Oh Chestnut Tree! Oh Chestnut Tree, you have seen it all!
Generations came, generation went and many more shall pass,
You stood here tall, you stand here tall and I believe
that you will always keep standing tall.
They admired your summer blossoms and sang praises of your winter glory,
Many an enchanted poets scratched their heads for words befitting your story.
Gallants of yore bowed beneath you to woo their ladies with roses in their hands,
You watched them woo, you watched them wed, silently you blessed them as they exchanged their wedding bands.
Tirelessly and gracefully you followed all the seasons of nature,
Turning green in spring, gold yellow in summer,
Shrivelling down to dull brown in every snow-clad winter.
Long ago at the age of five, I stood beneath you as a child,
You waved at me with your arm-like branches dotted with golden chestnuts wild,
You beckoned me with your grand huge size,
And you looked to me an old man so happy and so wise.
I still remember what joy I felt when you bid me farewell by swaying to and fro happily.
Then years passed and I returned here, a young girl with dreams of love and family,
I looked up to note any changes in your appearance anxiously,
But you swayed your branches with same joy and showered your golden chestnuts on me.
Today after many years, I stand before you in the Autumn of my life
I’ve had my full share of joys, sorrows, success and strife.
Oh Chestnut tree you have seen it all and have always stood here tall,
And for sure I believe that you will always keep standing tall,
While I stand before you now, old enough, ready to break and fall.
Many came before me and many shall follow me, many will woo, live and love and then pass into eternity,
But my Chestnut tree you must outlive them all and keep inspiring everyone by always standing tall.
