On Sunday, a group of farmers in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, protested in the Cauvery River regarding the ongoing conflict with Karnataka. The farmers clamoured for Tamil Nadu to receive Cauvery water. Farmers in Mandya, Karnataka, are protesting to stop water from Karnataka dams from being released into Tamil Nadu.
Since the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) ordered Karnataka to release 5000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days starting on September 13, farmers throughout the state have been protesting. While refusing to intervene in the Cauvery water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Thursday, a bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha, and Prashant Kumar Mishra stated that the CWMA and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) both regularly meet and monitor the water requirements every 15 days.
The Tamil Nadu government requested an increase in its daily allocation of Cauvery water from 5,000 to 7,200 cusecs, but the court turned down their request. Tamil Nadu has asked Karnataka for new instructions regarding the release of water from the Cauvery River, claiming that the neighboring State has changed its position and released less water than what was originally agreed upon.
