Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin announced that Google Pixel smartphones will soon be manufactured locally in the state, near Chennai. This move comes as Alphabet Inc., led by Sundar Pichai, aims to tap into India’s growing demand for premium smartphones, making it the world’s second-largest smartphone market.
The state already hosts manufacturing units of Samsung and Apple smartphones. TRB Raja, State Industry Minister, visited Google’s US headquarters with Foxconn company officials to discuss business prospects in Tamil Nadu. As a result, Google plans to establish a Pixel phone manufacturing plant in collaboration with Foxconn, creating employment opportunities for IT-educated youth.
Last year, Google partnered with HP to produce Chromebooks in Chennai. Sundar Pichai, in 2023, announced plans to manufacture Pixel smartphones locally, starting with Pixel 8 in 2024, affirming support for India’s Make In India initiative.
Tamil Nadu aims to become a USD 1 trillion economy by 2030 and has attracted substantial investments, contributing significantly to India’s electronic goods exports. India’s smartphone market continues to grow, with Tamil Nadu playing a vital role as a manufacturing hub.
