A suicide bomber struck an education centre in a Shiite neighbourhood of Kabul on Friday, killing 19 people and injuring 27, according to a Taliban-appointed spokesman for the Kabul police chief.

The explosion occurred inside the centre in Kabul’s Dashti Barchi neighbourhood early in the morning, according to spokesman Khalid Zadran. In the immediate aftermath of the bombing, he had no further information.

The bombing was the latest in a string of attacks since the Taliban took power. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in the area, which is primarily populated by Afghanistan’s minority Shiite community.

The Islamic State group, which has been the Taliban’s main rival since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, has previously targeted the Hazara community, including Dashti Barchi.

“Our teams have dispatched at the site of the blast to find out more details,” Abdul Nafi Takor, a Taliban-appointed spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said earlier.
