FIVE LESSER-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT DELHI METRO

The Delhi Metro, or “Dil of Dilwalo Ki Delhi,” turned 20 years old in December 2022. In its 20-year golden journey, Delhi Metro has become a place of memories for many Delhiites. As of now, the Delhi Metro network comprises around 390.14 km with 286 stations. The organisation has now crossed the limits of Delhi to arrive at Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh and Ballabhgarh in Haryana. But are you aware of some unknown facts in the history of the Delhi Metro.

THE VOICE

“Kripya Dhyaan Dijiye” , “May I have your attention, please”. Sometimes you may wonder who is behind these magical voices that never let us miss our station. Well, the voices behind the Delhi Metro announcements are those of yesteryear Doordarshan news anchors Rini Simon Khanna in English and Shammi Narang in Hindi.

HIGHEST, DEEPEST POINTS

The Delhi Metro crosses Delhi either in the underground tunnels or on the elevated pillars. The Delhi Metro attains its highest elevation of 23.6 metres on the Pink Line at Dhaula Kuan, passing over busy ring roads and the airport express line. At 29 metres (95 ft) underground, Hauz Khas on the magenta and yellow lines is the deepest station in the Delhi Metro.

COLOUR CODED LINES

You may wonder, since there are so many interchanges, exactly how many metro lines are present in the Delhi Metro network. According to the oldest, the colours are as follows: red, yellow, blue, green, violet, orange, magenta, pink, grey, and silver.

NEUTRAL ZONES

Have you ever noticed how the lights turn on and off after Udyog Bhawan? Most passengers complain when the lights and the AC go off at certain points in the metro journey. These are actually neutral zones, where the power supply switches from one sub-station to another.

PERSONAL BOOKINGS

Tourists, foreign travelers, and government or private school children, as well as NGOs running schools for differently abled children, can book coaches for metro tours for anything between Rs 30,000 and Rs 50,000, provided that they have a group of 45 to 150 people.
