In an unusual twist of fate, 32-year-old Mayur Tarapara, who works as a computer operator in his relative’s diamond business at Surat in Gujarat, cut off four fingers of his left hand using a sharp knife. He claimed that he chopped off his fingers to declare himself unsuitable for work in the Anabh Gems business.
Apparently, he didn’t have the guts to inform his family about his desire to leave his job. Initially, he created a tale in which he told the police that he had woken up on the side of the road to find that his fingers were missing. An investigation was done by the police, after which they decided that it was a self-inflicted injury.
According to the Surat Crime Branch, Tarapara, who worked in the accounts department, intentionally severed his fingers to get unfit for the job. He had reportedly told the police that on December 8, he was heading to a friend’s house when he passed out from dizziness near Vedanta Circle, only to find his fingers missing upon regaining consciousness. Initially, there was speculation that the fingers might have been removed for black magic, but further investigation pointed to his involvement.
According to the Crime Branch, Tarapara had confessed to buying a sharp knife from a shop near Char Rasta in Singanpore. On December 12 night, he went to Amroli Ring Road, parked his motorcycle, and cut off his four fingers with the knife. To avoid heavy bleeding, he tied a rope around his elbow. He then discarded the knife and his fingers in a bag. His friends later took him to the hospital, and three of the fingers were recovered from a bag, with the knife also found in another bag.
The case is still under investigation by the Amroli police.
