The Supreme Court has requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to respond to a petition asking for regulations to be established. These regulations would dictate that if the “None of the Above” (NOTA) option receives a majority in an election, the election in that constituency should be deemed invalid, requiring a fresh election. The petition also calls for regulations stipulating that candidates who receive fewer votes than NOTA should be barred from contesting any elections for five years. Additionally, the petition seeks to ensure that NOTA is properly and prominently displayed as a “fictional candidate.”
