The Supreme Court in the case Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association v. Assam Wrestling Association and Ors observed and has stayed the elections in light of the grievance that the Assam Wrestling Association had not been affiliated with the WFI on June 25, 2023 and hence they cannot participate in the upcoming elections.
The counsel appearing for the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association submitted before the Apex Court that even though the disputes between the various states have been resolved, thus, the elections had to be rescheduled again due to stay by the High Court.
The court in the case observed and has also pointed out that the court extended the interim stay by the High Court. It has also been submitted before the court that the High Court stayed the elections based on a petition moved by the third party.
The single bench headed by Justice Nani Tagia of the Gauhati High Court in the case observed and has the impugned interim order on June 25, 2023.
The Judge in the case observed and has directed the Executive Committee of the WFI not to proceed with the election that was scheduled to be held on July 11, 2023.
The Single judge in the case observed and has issued the notice to the WFI and the Union Sports Ministry in the matter and sought their response.
It has also been stated that the WFI Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of Former WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Singh had recommended to the General Council of the WFI that the Assam Association is entitled to be affiliated with the WFI in the year 2014.
In the present case, Notably Brij Bhushan Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by prominent female wrestlers. The Delhi Police charge sheeted him in the said case.
