Subhash Tamang made history by becoming the first golfer from Nepal to secure victory in the prestigious All-India Amateur Championships organized by the Indian Golf Union. The 21-year-old Tamang triumphed over India’s Rohit with an impressive score of 9 and 7 in the final, held at the iconic Royal Calcutta Golf Club for the 122nd edition of the tournament.
Throughout the match, Tamang and Rohit remained closely matched for the first 15 holes. However, Tamang pulled away, finishing 3-up after 18 holes. In the second session, Tamang continued his stellar performance, ultimately winning the match with a commanding lead of nine holes and seven holes left to play. Expressing his joy, the modest Tamang, who arrived in India in 2022 to refine his skills under Indian golf professional Tarun Sardesai at his academy near Bengaluru, described the victory as the happiest moment of his life. Tamang’s remarkable achievements have earned him opportunities to participate in prestigious events such as the Asia Pacific Amateur Championships and other international tournaments. Tamang’s golfing journey began when he was spotted by Tashi Ghale, a Nepalese businessman and the President of the Nepal Golf Association. Ghale introduced him to Deepak Acharya, the Director of Operations and a teaching professional at Gokarna Golf Club, where Tamang received training. In 2022, with the support of Ghale and Acharya, Tamang traveled to India to train with Sardesai, who currently coaches the Nepal team.
Despite starting the week with a world ranking of 153rd, Tamang’s latest victory in the All-India Amateur Championships is expected to significantly improve his ranking and bring him closer to his career-best position. The flagship event of the Indian Golf Union, the All-India Amateur Championships, features a 36-hole stroke play event initially to narrow the field down to 32 for the Matchplay section. Tamang, who initially ranked fourth in the 36-hole stroke play at the beginning of the week, navigated through various opponents, including a challenging first-round match that went to extra holes against Kanav Chauhan.
