Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Congratulates Nirmala Sitharaman On Reappointment

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry congratulated Nirmala Sitharaman on her reappointment as Finance Minister and expressed gratitude for India’s support during tough times and confidence in growing economic ties.

Ali Sabry posted on X saying, “My sincere congratulations to @nsitharaman on being reappointed Minister of Finance & Minister of Corporate Affairs of #India. We appreciate the strong support you extended to #SriLanka during our challenging times, and I am confident the economic ties between our two nations will continue to grow.”

India’s Support To Sri Lanka

During Sri Lanka’s economic crisis battle in 2023, India’s support under its ‘Neighborhood First’ policy gave the island country anchorage.

EAM S Jaishankar twice visited Sri Lanka in 2023. During his January visit last year, Jaishankar assured India’s unwavering support to the island nation in terms of its economic recovery and extended an invite to the country’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe to visit India. His second visit happened in October.

For the second consecutive time, Nirmala Sitharaman has retained her position as the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. Her continuation under PM Narendra Modi’s new administration reflects a consistent endorsement of her leadership in managing the country’s fiscal and corporate policies.

Her tenure in the Modi government commenced in 2014 when she was appointed as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. Subsequently, she was promoted to the position of Minister of Commerce and Industry, with independent charge. In 2017, she became India’s first woman to serve as a full-time defense minister, marking a historic milestone.

Sitharaman, who served in both the 2014 and 2019 Modi cabinets, took on the role of Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs in 2019. She has made history as the first woman to occupy these positions full-time, a distinction previously held only by Indira Gandhi as an additional portfolio.
