Steve Smith’s record-breaking century, along with a 112-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins, set the stage for Australia’s dominant performance in the first session of day two at the MCG. As a result, Australia reached 454/7 at the break, with Smith on 139* and Mitchell Starc at 15* in Boxing Day Test match. India struggled to find a response, as Australia added 143 runs at a rate of over five runs per over.

Australia’s Fast Start

Australia resumed their innings at 311/6, with Smith (68*) and Cummins (8*) leading the charge. The pair quickly built momentum, scoring 48 runs in the first 10 overs. Notably, Akash Deep had a particularly costly over, as Smith and Cummins struck three fours. Consequently, Australia reached the 350-run mark in 95.2 overs.

Smith’s Century

As the day progressed, Smith continued his excellent form, scoring his second century of the series off just 167 balls. He reached the milestone with a drive past extra cover, including nine fours and two sixes. This century marked Smith’s 34th Test hundred and his fifth at the MCG, further solidifying his strong connection with the ground.

India’s Struggles with the Bowlers

Despite India’s efforts to break the partnership, they were unsuccessful. They brought in Siraj, Jadeja, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, but Siraj’s overs leaked 15 and 12 runs. As a result, Australia reached 400 runs in 103.1 overs, with Smith playing in an attacking manner after his century.

Partnership Broken

Eventually, the 112-run stand came to an end when Jadeja bowled Cummins, who was caught by Nitish after the ball hit the toe of his bat. Cummins fell for a quick 49 off 63 balls, leaving Australia at 411/7 in 104.1 overs.

Smith and Starc End the Session Strong

Although the partnership was broken, Starc held one end while Smith continued to dominate. Consequently, Australia finished the session without losing any further wickets, with Smith still at the crease.

Brief Scores

Australia: 454/7 (Steve Smith 139*, Marnus Labuschagne 72, Jasprit Bumrah 3/97).
