Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah Set to Skip Home Series Against England: Report

India’s senior trio, skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, are likely to miss the upcoming white-ball series against England after the end of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. According to Sports Tak, they will be rested for workload management purposes, but the final decision will be taken after consulting the players.

India and England will play five T20Is from January 22, only 15 days after the last day of the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar series. The ODIs will start on February 6. Rohit and Kohli have already retired from T20Is, and Bumrah will not play both formats. These ODIs are India’s last bilateral series before the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE.

Bumrah did not play in the third Test against New Zealand, and Rohit was not available for the Perth Test due to the birth of his child. Other than these, this trio has played continuously for the last six months.

Bumrah has particularly been very active, bowling 141.2 overs in the four Tests against Australia, including a record 53.2 overs in the Melbourne Test, which is the highest he has bowled in any red-ball game.

Rohit accepted that Bumrah’s workload needs to be managed and said, “To be honest, he has bowled a lot of overs. There is no doubt about it. But again, every Test match we play, we keep that in mind. You know, the workloads of all the bowlers in fact.”. But again, if somebody is in such a great form, you want to try and maximize that form how much ever you can. And that is what we’ve been trying to do with Bumrah.

But there comes a time where you need to step back a little bit and give him that little bit of extra breather as well. So, we’ve been very careful. I’ve been very careful. I talk to him about how he feels and stuff like that. So, yeah. Those things should be managed carefully. And I’m trying to do that on the field.”
