Nishant Dev Falls to Omari Jones at 1st Olympic Boxing Qualifier

Nishant Dev of India put up a valiant effort but ultimately lost 1-4 to USA’s Omari Jones, the 2021 World Championships silver medallist, in the men’s 71kg quarter-finals at the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifier held in Busto Arsizio, Italy.

In a closely contested match, the initial two rounds showcased distinct performances. Omari asserted dominance in the first round, capitalizing on his speed advantage to secure a flawless 5-0 lead.

Nevertheless, Nishant rallied and appeared more impactful, particularly as the southpaw unleashed effective combinations of left hooks and jabs. The three-minute round was action-packed, marked by considerable holding and grappling. While Omari relied on counter-attacks, it was Nishant who clinched the second round with a scoreline of 4-1.

The last round was highly intense, with Nishant maintaining his aggressive stance and gaining an early advantage. As the round advanced, both boxers showed signs of fatigue, but Jones capitalized on the final 60 seconds by delivering some impactful punches, ultimately swaying the match decision in his favor.

Following Nishant’s defeat, India’s tally for the Paris Olympic Games 2024 stands at four quotas. Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) secured their berths with outstanding performances at the Asian Games.

Indian boxers will have another chance to earn quotas for the Paris Olympics at the second World Qualification Tournament, scheduled to take place in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3.
