Neeraj Chopra: ‘In Paris Olympics, Anything Is Possible!’

As the outdoor season begins, Indian javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena are gearing up for the Doha leg of the Diamond League on May 10 with renewed confidence. Their performance in events leading to the Paris 2024 Olympics will also reflect their overseas training under top coaches. Chopra, the world and Olympic champion, and Jena, his fellow athlete, have both secured spots for the upcoming Summer Olympics, but Chopra believes another Indian thrower, Manu DP, should also qualify for Paris.

Manu DP is vying for a spot alongside Chopra and Jena in Paris. Although he hasn’t yet met the Paris Olympics qualifying standard of 85.50 meters, he ranks comfortably at 11th in the Road to Paris rankings. His recent performance in the Indian Grand Prix I in Bengaluru showcased his potential, winning the javelin throw competition with a throw of 81.91m. Manu’s training in Potchefstroom, South Africa, under coach Kashinath Naik, has been instrumental in his development.

The Indian government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme has been crucial for these athletes’ training, with over 4.87 Crore INR invested in the trio. Chopra, in particular, has received substantial support, emphasizing the importance of overseas training in his preparation. He’s meticulously planned his training schedule and competition itinerary to ensure peak performance at major events. Despite the pressure that comes with international competitions, Chopra remains focused on his training and nutrition, adapting to dietary changes to enhance his performance.

Chopra acknowledges the significance of teamwork, crediting his coach, physio, and strength trainer for his success. While he’s optimistic about their chances going forward, he acknowledges the unpredictability of sports. Regardless, Chopra’s stellar performance in Doha last year positions him as a favorite in the upcoming Diamond League event, where he’ll face tough competition from global javelin stars.
