Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the new Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah, who has held the position of BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and served as the Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021, will officially take over the ICC role on December 1, 2024.

Shah’s election comes after the current ICC Chair, Greg Barclay, decided not to seek a third term, leaving Shah as the sole nominee.

In his statement following the election, Shah expressed his commitment to expanding the global presence and appeal of cricket, highlighting the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a major milestone. “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said. “We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote advanced technologies, and introduce marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

Shah also emphasized the need for innovation and fresh ideas to propel the sport forward while drawing from the valuable experiences of the past. He believes the inclusion of cricket in the LA 2028 Olympics will be a pivotal moment for the sport’s growth on a global scale.

Shah’s election signals a new chapter for the ICC as it aims to further globalize the game and enhance its evolution on the international stage.
