Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, announced plans to send five uncrewed Starships to Mars within the next two years, aiming to open new horizons for Mars exploration.
Musk revealed that SpaceX would launch these uncrewed Starship missions during the next Earth-Mars transfer window in two years. If the missions succeed, crewed Mars missions could take place four years after. However, if challenges arise, the crewed missions might be delayed for another two years.
Musk has previously adjusted his timelines for reaching Mars. Earlier, he indicated that the first uncrewed Starship would land on Mars in five years, with the first crewed landing set for seven years. Now, this new plan sets an ambitious target.
In June, SpaceX achieved a breakthrough with a Starship rocket surviving a hypersonic return from space and landing safely in the Indian Ocean. Musk sees Starship as the key to not only reaching Mars but also to future moon missions.
NASA’s Artemis 3 mission, which includes a crewed moon landing using SpaceX’s Starship, has been delayed to September 2026. This delay, along with the cancellation of a private moon mission by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, highlights the challenges SpaceX still faces.
SpaceX remains determined to turn Mars colonization into a reality, with Musk’s vision pushing the boundaries of space exploration.
