Gordon Lightfoot, Canada’s legendary folk singer-songwriter who is popularly known for songs such as “If You Could Read My Mind” and “Sundown,” left us for his heavenly abode.

The famous folk singer who used to sing songs about Canadian identity, passed away on Monday at the age of 84.

The tragic news of his demise was confirmed by Gordon’s representative Victoria Lord, who revealed that the musician died in a hospital in Toronto. As of now there is no update regarding the cause of his death.

Who was Gordon Lightfoot

For those unversed, Lightfoot, regarded as one of the most famous voices to emerge from Toronto’s Yorkville folk club scene in the 1960s. He went on to record 20 studio albums along with writing over hundreds of songs.

Some of his popular songs includes “Carefree Highway,” “Early Morning Rain” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” among many more.

Honors & Achievements

Lightfoot received five Grammy nominations, three platinum records, and nine gold records for albums and singles in the 1970s. He has performed in over 1,500 concerts and recorded 500 songs in the more than 60 years since he began his career.

He toured in his later years. He recently cancelled upcoming shows in the United States and Canada, citing health concerns.

Tributes Poured In

After learning about the demise of the widely loved folk singer, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to his official Twitter and penned a heartfelt note. PM Justin wrote, “We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters.”

PM Justin further added “Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape. May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his legacy live on forever.”
