Dr. Rajesh Dhere, who was arrested in connection with the fatal accident of an elderly woman in Mumbai, was granted bail on Sunday. Dr. Dhere serves as the head of the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology department at Sion Hospital and is also the Dean of the BKC COVID Centre.

The tragic incident occurred when an elderly woman was fatally struck by a speeding car at Sion Hospital in central Mumbai on May 24. The vehicle involved in the accident belonged to Dr. Rajesh Dhere from Sion Hospital. Anil Jadhav, the accused’s lawyer, clarified that the offense for which Dr. Dhere was charged is a ‘bailable offence’.

“The offence, under which the case is registered, 304 A, is a bailable offence… He has been granted bail of Rs 20,000,” he told reporters.

The deceased, identified as Zubaida Sheikh, had been hospitalized at Sion Hospital for the past two weeks due to diabetes. She had been discharged just a week prior and was visiting for a follow-up. The police registered a case against the doctor under sections 304 A, 388, 279, 203, 177, and other sections of the Indian Penal Code based on a complaint filed by the deceased woman’s son, Shahnawaz Khan.

A senior police officer stated that the CCTV footage of the hospital premises is currently under scrutiny. According to police sources, the preliminary investigation suggests that the woman was involved in an accident, but the police are also exploring other angles in their investigation.
