The Jalandhar rural police arrested Harpreet Singh, the brother of Khalistani and Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib, Amritpal Singh, in Phillaur. Harpreet was found in possession of 4 grams of Ice (methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth). Social media erupted with the news, highlighting the irony that those whose election agenda was drug de addiction are now found to be involved with drugs.
Tarsem Singh, the father of Harpreet and Amritpal, claims that the arrest is a conspiracy to defame their family.
So far, three individuals have been detained in connection with the case. They are identified as Harpreet Singh, also known as Happy, from Jallupur Khera in Khiljian; Lovepreet Singh from Beas; and Sandeep Arora from Hebowal, Ludhiana, who allegedly supplied the narcotics.
An FIR has been filed under Sections 22, 27, and 29 of the NDPS Act at the Phillaur police station.
Harpreet and Lovepreet were apprehended in a white Creta on the Phillaur-Amritsar highway. Jalandhar SSP Ankur Gupta stated, “A suspicious car with tinted windows was found parked on the side of the national highway in Phillaur. Upon inspection, 4 grams of Ice were recovered from Harpreet and Lovepreet inside the car. They had a lighter, a weighing scale, and two mobile phones. Upon questioning, they admitted to sourcing the drugs from Sandeep Arora in Ludhiana, with the payment made via Paytm. Both tested positive for drugs in the medical report and confessed to buying the drugs for personal use.”
The SSP mentioned that the duo was traveling from Ludhiana to Amritsar when they were intercepted by the police.
Phillaur DSP Sarwanjeet Singh conducted a detailed search, recovering a half-burnt Rs 20 note rolled into a pipe from Harpreet’s shirt pocket, 4 grams of Ice from another pocket, two lighters, and a digital weighing scale. From a purse kept by the driver’s seat, silver paper (used to inhale drugs) and lighters were also found.
Harpreet faces charges in previous cases, including an arrest last year related to the seizure of weapons from Shahkot, following the crackdown on Amritpal.
The arrested individuals will be presented in court, and their remand is being sought, SSP Gupta added.
