The other reason to celebrate is that Shahana Goswami is an actress known for subtle portrayals. The Oscars 2025 shortlist for Santosh, a Hindi movie representing the UK, is trying to make it to the final list in the Best International Feature Film category. She defeated India’s Laapataa Ladies, which was left out of the final list for the Oscar.
Shahana was so thrilled that she turned to Instagram to post about it, especially to the writer-director of the movie, Sandhya Suri. She wrote, “So happy for the team, especially our writer-director Sandhya Suri, for this little glory of recognition for our film Santosh! How incredible to be shortlisted from amongst 85 films. Thank you to everyone who loved it, supported it, and voted for it.

In the movie, Shahana Goswami plays Santosh, a recently widowed lady who takes over her late husband’s position as a police constable. Santosh joins the investigation into the murder of a young girl from a marginalized community, which is headed by Inspector Sharma, a feminist played by Sunita Rajwar. Santosh received positive reviews when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
India’s official Oscar submission, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, was not included in the shortlist. One of the movie’s actors, actress Chhaya Kadam, expressed her unhappiness in a recent interview. “What are we able to do? I’m furious. We had such lofty goals for our movie,” she remarked. She does, however express optimism for the future by saying that “It’s okay, We will keep fighting all of our next flicks. Again, we will attend Oscars and get much further in this competition the next time.”
