A fire ripped through a residential building in Mumbai’s Goregaon neighbourhood early Friday, killing seven people, including two youngsters, and injuring over 40, according to a civic official. Some of those hurt are in critical condition.

According to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official, up to 30 residents were rescued from the terrace and various storeys of the ground-plus-seven construction.

The fire broke out about 3 a.m. inside the Jay Sandesh building in Goregaon West, according to a BMC officer. Initially, officials referred to the fire-damaged edifice as Jay Bhavani. According to officials, the cause of the fire has yet to be identified.

The victims of the incident were sent to a trauma center in Jogeshwari and the civic-run Cooper Hospital in Juhu, authorities said.

Six of them, including two juveniles and as many ladies, were certified dead by physicians. Another person died while undergoing treatment, bringing the total to seven. According to officials, some of the injured are in critical condition.

Devendra Fadnavis, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, conveyed his condolences over the occurrence. “I’m sorry to hear about the loss of life in the fire in #Goregaon, Mumbai.” We are in contact with BMC and Mumbai Police officials, and we are providing every support. “My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and best wishes to those who have been injured,” he wrote on X.

The fire had completely engulfed the structure before firefighters arrived. According to fire officials, it entirely destroyed the stores, scrap metal, and two-wheelers on the ground floor.
