SECOND WAVE EBBING, 24 STATES REPORT DECLINE IN COVID CASES: GOVT

India reports 211,298 new Covid-19 cases and 3,847 deaths in last 24 hours. In 13 states fewer than 1,000 fresh cases have been reported.

With India reporting 211,298 new Covid-19 cases and 3,847 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Centre on Thursday said that the country is seeing a stabilisation of the second wave of Covid-19 in India.

“It is reassuring that we are on the downswing of the second wave, and it will be sustained if restrictions open up systematically as the time comes,” Dr V.K. Paul, Member-Health, Niti Aayog said during a briefing.

Meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry on Thursday informed that the 24 states have reported a decline in active coronavirus cases since last week and asserted that the national recovery rate touching 90 per cent is a positive indication.

Speaking at a press briefing, Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary at Union Health Ministry, said: “24 states have reported a decline in active cases since last week. There are 15 states in which 1,000-5,000 cases have been reported every day. And in 13 states less than 1,000 cases have been reported while 24 states have reported a continued decline in active cases since last week.”

“Overall recoveries are now exceeding the number of cases being reported on a daily basis. The recovery rate has increased from 85.6 per cent to 90 per cent now, it’s a positive indication,” he said.

Agarwal said a steady decline in coronavirus cases has been reported in the country for the last few weeks. “For the last 20 days, it has continued to register a decline in different states. Where on May 7, around 414,000 cases were reported, it decreased to 348,000 and after that, it fell below 3 lakh and stood at 281,000,” he added.

“Today around 211,000 cases have been reported in the country. From 17 May, less than 3 lakh cases have been reported in the country. It is a positive development, we need to monitor it,” he added further.

The active caseload in the country has reduced to 24,19,907, with a net decline of 75,684 cases in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said. The daily Covid-19 positivity rate has remained less than 10 per cent for 3 consecutive days. The weekly Positivity Rate currently stands at 10.93 per cent, the health ministry said.

With 283,135 fresh recoveries in the last 24 hours, India’s cumulative recoveries have reached 2,46,33,951 today. The national recovery rate has further improved and now stands at 90.01 per cent. The cumulative caseload has mounted to 2,73,69,093, while the death toll has gone up to 315,235.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, a total of 21,757,857 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours in the country and cumulatively 33,69,69,353 tests have been done so far.

The Union Health Ministry has informed that nearly 20.27 crore vaccine doses administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive. “As many as 20,26,95,874 vaccine doses administered across India since January 16. After the USA, India is the 2nd country to achieve the 20 crore Vaccination doses landmark,” the ministry said. (ANI)

The national capital Delhi too saw in decline in Covid cases. With 1,072 fresh positive cases being recorded in the last 24 hours, Delhi’s positivity rate dropped to 1.53 per cent, which is the lowest since 24 March. Delhi is witnessing a steady decline in daily coronavirus cases since the last few weeks.

According to the Delhi government’s health bulletin on Thursday, the fresh cases are the lowest since 30 March. As many as 3,725 people recovered from disease in the 24-hour period. The city recorded 117 new deaths, which is the lowest since April 15 when 112 deaths were reported.

As per the government data, 70,068 tests were conducted during the last 24 hours and 1,90,09,274 tests were conducted so far. The cumulative caseload of Delhi has now reached 14,22,549 including 16,378 active cases, 13,82,359 recoveries and 23,812 deaths.

On April 20, Delhi registered the biggest spike of new 28,395 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began last year. On April 26, the city registered the highest ever positivity rate 36.24 per cent.
