Meta to Build 50,000 km Undersea Cable Connecting Five Continents, ‘Longer Than Earth’s Circumference’

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has just revealed its most ambitious digital infrastructure initiative yet, called Project Waterworth. This undersea cable system will connect five principal continents spanning over 50,000 km, which is longer than the circumference of Earth, thereby improving worldwide connectivity and enabling developments in artificial intelligence (AI).

Investment of Several Billion Dollars in Worldwide Digital Highways

Meta says Project Waterworth is a multibillion-dollar, multi-year project intended to enhance the dependability and scope of digital networks across the world. The undersea cable will establish three new maritime corridors offering industry-leading, high-speed connection to places including the United States, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

In its statement, Meta said, “Project Waterworth will be a multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment to strengthen the scale and reliability of the world’s digital highways by opening three new oceanic corridors with the abundant, high-speed connectivity needed to drive AI innovation around the world.”

Building Strong Digital Global Infrastructure

Handling more than 95 percent of intercontinental traffic, subsea cable networks underlie worldwide digital infrastructure. Meta intends to gently bury the cable system up to 7,000 meters deep in high-risk fault zones, including shallower coastal waters, to stop ship anchors and other dangers from causing damage.

The plan seeks to drive technical advancement in the linked areas, foster economic cooperation, and enable digital inclusion.

India’s Contribution to the Waterworth Initiative

Emphasizing how Waterworth will speed up India’s digital economy, Meta particularly noted the quickly expanding digital infrastructure of the country.

The firm said, “For example, in India, where we’ve already seen significant growth and investment in digital infrastructure, Waterworth will help accelerate this progress and support the country’s ambitious plans for its digital economy.”

Following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, this project was also mentioned in the US-India Joint Leaders’ Statement earlier this month, further highlighting its strategic relevance.

Advancing artificial intelligence everywhere

Apart from improving connectivity, Meta sees Project Waterworth as an AI development game-changer. Across international markets, the new high-speed network will support faster and more efficient artificial intelligence interactions.

Meta added, “With Project Waterworth, we can help ensure that the benefits of AI and other emerging technologies are available to everyone, regardless of where they live or work.”

Project Waterworth will help to transform international digital infrastructure, therefore propelling financial development and technological advancement across continents, as Meta launches this daring undertaking.
