In response to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, authorities at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital have taken a proactive step by establishing a special Out-Patient Department (OPD) dedicated to pollution-related illnesses. Dr Ajay Shukla, Director of RML Hospital, announced that the special OPD aims to provide comprehensive care for patients affected by pollution, considering its impact on multiple organs.

The pollution-related illnesses OPD will feature a multi-departmental clinic, incorporating five key departments: the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT), skin, respiratory tract, eye, and psychiatric departments. Operating on Monday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the OPD addresses the surge in patients due to pollution, with a reported 30% increase in the number of cases.

Dr. Shukla emphasised the importance of a dedicated facility to address pollution-related health issues, acknowledging the diverse impact on various organs. The move is part of the hospital’s commitment to providing specialised care and managing the growing health concerns associated with poor air quality in the region.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced that anti-pollution measures, including restrictions on certain vehicles and a ban on firecrackers, will remain enforced in Delhi under GRAP IV regulations until further notice from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Rai highlighted the challenges posed by the influx of firecrackers from neighbouring states, despite the ban on their production, storage, and sale in Delhi.
