Renowned director Sangeeth Sivan, known for his work in Malayalam and Hindi cinema, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 61. He collaborated with Mohanlal on Malayalam projects and directed Hindi films including ‘Zor,’ ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum,’ and ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2.’

Sivan, aged 61, passed away on May 8 at a hospital in Mumbai.

Ritesh Deshmukh, who collaborated with the director, shared a note offering his last tribute. He wrote, “Deeply saddened and shocked to know that Sangeeth Sivan Sir is no more. As a newcomer all you want is someone to believe in you and take a chance.. can’t thank him enough for Kya Kool Hai Hum & Apna Sapna Money Money. Soft spoken, gentle and a wonderful human being. Am heart broken today, my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, his wife, kids, brothers. I will miss you Da !!!!! And your infectious laughter!!! Rest in Glory…”


Sangeeth Sivan was the eldest son of photographer and cinematographer Sivan, and the brother of Santosh Sivan and Sanjeev Sivan.

He scripted and helmed the crime thriller ‘Vyooham’, featuring Raghuvaran and Sukumaran, marking his directorial debut in 1990. Sivan also directed three successful films with Mohanlal – ‘Yodha’, ‘Gandharvam’, and ‘Nirnayam’. In Bollywood, he directed movies like ‘Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne’, ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum’, ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’, and more.

He returned to the spotlight with ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2’.
