Have you watched those Sci-fi futuristic films where three-dimensional traffic in vertical megacities has been shown? Well, in today’s ever-evolving world, smart cities are no longer stuck in futuristic films, they have now started to emerge as a hub of innovation, connectivity and efficiency. And one of the crucial reasons behind this transformation is the implementation of ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System). It is a video-based, artificial intelligence and machine learning-powered traffic enforcement and management solution which offers real-time alerts for violations and a complete evidence-capturing mechanism.

How Does ITMS Intelligent Traffic Management System Work?
ITMS (Intelligent Traffic Management System) is a context-sensitive solution that utilizes real-time data from interconnected road infrastructure and predictive analytics to efficiently coordinate traffic flow. It uses a combination of technologies such as sensors, cameras, and data analytics to monitor traffic flow and manage traffic in real-time. By analyzing traffic data, ITMS can identify congestion points, predict traffic patterns, and optimize traffic signal timings, explains Mr. Anoop G Prabhu, Co-founder & C.T.O of Vehant Technologies

Capabilities of an Intelligent Traffic Management System:

=Vehicle Detection through Surveillance Camera: In ITMS, surveillance cameras are strategically placed across road networks. They are equipped with advanced-level image and video processing capabilities, giving them the advantage of capturing high-quality footage in various weather and lighting conditions. It helps to determine traffic density and queue length based on vehicle count and zone occupancy data, resulting in a smoother flow of cars and improved junction traffic flow management.

=Radar Based Speed Violation Detection System: It incorporates a 4D radar and a lane video camera designed for number plate reading and evidence capture. Capable of detecting speed limits up to 320 km/h, it operates seamlessly in diverse weather conditions, including rain, fog, dust, and darkness, without necessitating cleaning. The gathered data is then transmitted to the central platform, enabling real-time viewing of feeds and violations, facilitating automated traffic management, and processing e-challans for offenders

=Vehicle Mounted Automatic Number Plate Recognition System: Number plate technology is one of the key elements in ITMS. Through this license plate recognition system vehicles can be identified by analysing the images that are captured through continuous video recording surveillance cameras. It uses image processing techniques which conduct the entire process. The system further augments the enforcement capabilities of traffic authorities by being able to capture and identify violators, while being on the move.

=Red Light Violation Detection: Recent reports claim that over the years, India has seen a steep rise of 79% in road accident deaths and one major cause behind this is vehicles violating the red-light. Therefore, red light violation detection in Intelligent traffic management systems has become more important than ever. Through these video-based detection systems once a vehicle is detected with the help of video frames the violation is detected and evidence is stored to support the authorities to move ahead with the further procedure.

=Triple Riding Detection: This is a video-based automated violation system which is made specifically for two-wheelers. The primary goal of this system is to detect situations where 3 people are riding. This system identifies violations in real time by just recognising the license plates. When the system’s field of view captures more than two people riding a vehicle, the intelligent camera provides the number plate which is associated with the violator.

=No-Helmet Detection: The main purpose of this detection system is to make sure that people traveling on two-wheelers are safe. These systems are made using trained models and datasets that are useful in various fields. The head is the most crucial part of the human body and every year around 74% of riders avoid wearing helmets which leads to various types of road accidents.

=Speed Violation Detection: In this, the system is capable of assessing the speed of a vehicle, its direction and the range of the driver. With the help of an HD camera, they can easily capture the vehicle that is moving higher than the speed that is set. This system has a user-friendly interface with the capacity to cover multiple lanes at the same time.

=No Seat- Belt Detection: Other capabilities of ITMS include detection of no seat belt while driving, use of mobile phone while driving, detecting defective number plate while driving, detecting parked vehicles in ‘No Parking’ zone, detecting vehicles driving in the wrong/reverse direction
With the constant evolution of smart cities, the emergence of Intelligent Traffic Management systems is becoming more important than ever. This advanced technological system not just monitors and detects violations in real time but also makes sure that people are living a healthy and safe life. These highly advanced detection sets a foundation for a future where cities will be identified with smooth connectivity and intelligent infrastructure.
