Warning Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of a split in the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray MP Sanjay Raut on Friday said coming to Maharashtra and defaming Veer Savarkar was unacceptable.
Responding to Rahul’s remark against Veer Savarkar on Thursday, claiming that the saffron ideologue took pension from the British rul ers in lieu of working against the country and had pleaded with the Raj to be pardoned, Raut said the statement might result in a rift in the MVA, which comprises the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), apart from the Uddhav-Sena. “We consider Veer Savarkar as a reverential figure,” Raut said.
Besides the Congress’ allies, BJP on Friday again raked up the issue. Lashing out at Rahul, BJP national president JP Nadda said that the Congress leader is out on the road doing Bharat Jodo Yatra to “not to unite India, but to break it”.
“Just yesterday, Rahul Gandhi gave a condemnable statement against freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. This shows what their thinking is, they have not come out to unite India, they have come out to break it,” Nadda said while addressing an election rally in Gujarat’s Surat.
In another development, a complaint has been filed in Maharashtra against Rahul for allegedly making “derogatory remarks” against freedom fighter VD Savarkar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra by Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena leader Vandana Dongre. The complaint was filed on Thursday in the Thane Nagar police station stating that the sentiments of the local citizens were hurt by Gandhi’s remarks. A case of Non-Cognizable (NCR) Offense has been registered under section 500, 501 of IPC. Rahul Gandhi, during a press conference in Maharashtra’s Akola on Thursday, had alleged that Savarkar betrayed leaders like M.K Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel by signing a letter of apology to the British before independence.
