The recent study, on Punjab’s female police staff in which they were interviewed regarding the various issues of prisoners, reveals appalling outcomes. This study is published in NIU International Journal of Human Rights and researcher did study concentrating on Faridkot based Police station with total number (150) personnel as a sample size. This is really appalling that Police staff is unable to make prisoners aware of their rights or even protect the same.

25 percent of Female Police staff is less aware of the prisoners’ rights whereas 60 percent of Male police staff is aware of the right provisions and work what they are doing. Regarding the prevalence of violence in the prison, 40% of the police staffs opined at low level and 10% of them only opined at high level. Among female respondents, 33.3% of them opined at low level and 16.6% of them expressed at high level of violence happenings in the prison. With regard to the question of overcrowding in the prison, 36.6% of the male respondents opined at low level whereas 13.3% of them at high level. In female category, 36.6% of the respondents opined at low level whereas 13.3% of them opined at high level of overcrowding in the sampling prison in Faridkot.

Regarding the question of torture and other humiliations meted out to the prisoners, 40% of the male respondents opined at low level and only 10% of them obliged about the activities. Among female respondents, 36.6% of them refused about the torture incidents and only 13.3% of them obliged about the torture related in- human activities.

As per the study, a significant majority of the male police respondents are highly aware of the basic rights of prisoners. Invariably both of the male and female police respondents opined at low level regarding violence in the prison. Both male and female respondents are similar in their opinion level regarding congestion in the prison. Male police respondents opined at low level of torture in the prison. Female police respondents opined about the high level of hygienic condition in the prison. Female prisoners are less aware of prisoner’s rights, the study deduced.

Majority of male prisoners opined at high level of violence in the prison. Male prisoners opined at high level of crowding in the prison than women. Comparatively male prisoners are coming across huge level of torture.
