Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially marked her entry into Parliament as she took her oath as a Member of the Lok Sabha on Thursday, carrying a copy of the Indian Constitution. The Congress leader won the Wayanad bypolls with a significant margin of 4,10,931 votes.
Following the tradition set by her brother Rahul Gandhi, who often carries a red-bound copy of the Constitution during public appearances to symbolize its importance, Priyanka Gandhi’s gesture underscored the Congress’s ongoing focus on “protecting the Constitution.”
Her oath-taking moment during the Winter Session of Parliament also marked a historic milestone, with all three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family—Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi—now serving as MPs together for the first time in decades.
Priyanka Gandhi’s Wayanad victory followed Rahul Gandhi’s decision to vacate the seat in favor of Rae Bareli, after winning both constituencies in the April 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The bypoll saw her secure a decisive victory over BJP’s Navya Haridas and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri, reaffirming Wayanad as a Congress stronghold.
Often compared to her grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her charisma and resemblance, Priyanka has been a pivotal campaigner for the Congress over the years, playing a key role in electoral strategies and public outreach.
Rahul Gandhi, who was sworn in as an MP earlier this year, had concluded his oath with the words “Jai Hind, Jai Samvidan,” emphasizing the importance of constitutional values—an approach mirrored by Priyanka in her parliamentary debut.
