The President of India has appointed Justice H.S Thangkhiew, the senior-most Judge of the Meghalaya High Court as its Acting Chief Justice with effect from November 2, 2023 as the current Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee retired today.
The Notification issued stated that in exercise of the powers conferred under Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice Hamarsan Singh Thanglchiew, Judge of the Meghalaya High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from November 02, 2023 which being consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Sanjib Banerjee, Chief Justice, Meghalaya High Court on November 01, 2023.

Justice H.S Thangkhiew in 1990 did his LL. B from Delhi University and he was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in the year 1990-1991.
Justice H.S Thangkhiew after the long in legal practice the Gauhati High Court had designated as senior Advocate in August 2010.
Justice H.S Thangkhiew assumed office as a judge of the High Court of Meghalaya on November 19, 2018 and he has previously also served as Acting Chief Justice in the year 2019.
