Late last night, the Sonamura District Police apprehended two individuals for allegedly smuggling 23 packets containing a total of 85 kilograms of dried cannabis, authorities confirmed.

The suspects were identified as Jitendra Jamatia and his associate, Fiju Jamatia. According to Jayanta Kr Dey, the officer-in-charge of Sonamura Police Station, the incident unfolded during a routine vehicle check in the Khedabari area.

“Police officers, stationed for regular checks, became suspicious of a car bearing registration number TR 03 N 0421. Upon halting the vehicle, a thorough search revealed 23 packets containing a total of 85 kilograms of dried cannabis,” stated Dey.

The driver, Jitendra Jamatia, and his associate, Fiju Jamatia, were promptly detained following the discovery. The estimated market value of the seized cannabis is reported to be between 35 lakhs to 40 lakhs rupees, as per official sources.

Subsequent to the arrest, both the vehicle and the confiscated cannabis were transported to the Sonamura police station. Authorities disclosed that a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) was filed against the suspects on Thursday night, with investigations currently underway.

The Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station affirmed that the accused will be presented in court on Friday, marking the commencement of legal proceedings against them.
