Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to Guyana, the first by an Indian PM in 56 years, marks a new chapter in India-Guyana relations. PM Modi was greeted with a ceremonial welcome, a Guard of Honour, and vibrant cultural performances in Georgetown. In a symbolic gesture, he received the ‘Key to the City of Georgetown,’ signifying the importance of his visit.
Speaking at the press meeting, President Irfaan Ali said, “PM Modi’s visit represents a significant milestone in enhancing cooperation between the two nations. We are grateful for India’s support in our sugar industry and other critical areas.”
The visit saw the signing of several agreements focusing on:

President Ali emphasized collaboration in infrastructure development, education, and human capital growth to diversify Guyana’s economy further.
Recalling his previous visit as a regular citizen 24 years ago, PM Modi said, “It is a significant milestone for me to visit as Prime Minister. I thank President Ali for his hospitality and for attending the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas last year, which inspired us to elevate our cooperation.”
