“The time has come; we cannot wait any longer,” said Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma in Parliament on Thursday. Speaking in favour of the Nari Shakti Vandan Bill, the Rajya Sabha MP added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the “unique foresight” to turn the Women’s Reservation Bill into reality, which was evidence that the Prime Minister is a “doer, not a talker.”But the Prime Minister proved that he is a doer rather than a talker.
“I come from the state of Haryana, which has for the longest time grappled with the issue of an unequal sex ratio… [it] was 879 females for 1,000 males in 2001,” Mr Sharma said. He further pointed out that the sex ratio in the state has improved since 2015, when PM Modi launched the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” scheme. “In 2022, the ratio improved to 917. It has increased by 85 points. This shows the initiative backed by the state and the firm commitment of the government.”
He additionally added that there has been significant and swift advancement in increasing the presence of women in both Houses of Parliament and local governing bodies. As a result, he wholeheartedly supports this bill.
He went on to say that the adoption of the constitution brought a new era of equity and quality for women in India.
It guarantees equal political rights, including the right to vote, to women. Subsequently, he recited certain provisions from the Constitution of India, such as Article 14 and Article 39(A), which conferred authority and empowerment upon women in the nation.
The parliamentarian went on to highlight the BJP government’s several past endeavours to introduce and table the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
