Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the individuals who stood against the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. On the 48th anniversary of the Emergency, PM Modi acknowledged it as an indelible period in the nation’s history, remarking that it stood in complete contrast to Constitutional principles. He expressed his respect for those who resisted the dark days of the Emergency.

The Emergency, which lasted from 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977, was a period of political repression and curtailment of civil liberties in India. PM Modi’s tribute highlighted the significance of upholding Constitutional values.

“I pay homage to all those courageous people who resisted the Emergency and worked to strengthen our democratic spirit. The #DarkDaysOfEmergency remain an unforgettable period in our history, totally opposite to the values our Constitution celebrates,” he wrote.
